Horrible?Adorable! Halloween Floral Decoration for Your Dining Room

How can you create both a horrible and adorable Halloween atmosphere? Use warm oranges, fiery reds, harvesting golds, a pop of spooky black, and... lots of pumpkins!

In addition to being creepy, I would like my flowers to convey more of the harvesting joy to my guests this year. Since I have an 18-month-old baby at home, the materials I chose for this Halloween arrangements are more baby- friendly. When you see the color and smell the natural aroma of cinnamon, you are immediately sunk into a sweet autumn dream, however, deep in the dream, mysterious creatures are lurking.

Pumpkins are ubiquitous in the fall. They are on virtually every front porch, bearing spooky or silly faces and they even find their ways into soups and puddings. Using pumpkins as a centerpiece vase for flowers is a unique, yet simple seasonal addition to your holiday decoration. You’ll have to scoop out the seeds and place a plastic bag or a can inside as an insulator to avoid water seeping into the pumpkin.

For the arrangement of roses and little pumpkins, I drew inspiration from constellations, specifically, the zigzagging lines as they guide the eyes to dance within the pieces, adding movement to the arrangement. The brightness of sunflowers and the spray roses create a focal point at the bottom and contrast sharply with the dried, rough texture of cinnamon.

I placed a majority of pumpkins at the entrance to create a fall entryway. The secret to creating this entryway is achieving harmony of color and pumpkin size. The best color choice would be to use analogous colors of red, orange and yellow. The transition is smooth and pleasing to the eye so there’s no way you could go wrong with these classic colors. The size and the types of pumpkins are varied to add richness to the arrangements.

Preserved burning maple leaves are also an excellent ingredient for any Halloween arrangement. Its high flexibility allows you to bend it to different angles to better serve your arrangement. The huge leaves do a great job in covering the floral foam, so they are often best placed around the rim of the container.

Since candles are must at a holiday dinner, my Halloween table is mystified by these witch enchanted candles, creating an other-worldly feel. Oftentimes, I prefer flameless candles instead of real ones to ensure everyone’s safety. You won't have to worry about knocking candles over, and flameless candles release no toxins. Once the flowers have been set on the table, avoid introducing heat to them since they will dehydrate quickly.
