Sophisticated Tablescape in California Green

I recently had to create a table setting for a school charity luncheon. Of course, we all turned to California for the flower design’s theme.

I love it here in California. It is a magical source of inspiration. When I first moved here, I felt like I was on a long, long vacation. In the state itself, there are cliffs, beaches, volcanic lava beds, river valleys, flower fields, waterfalls, mountains, deserts, and hills rolling into the horizon--so much to explore. For a while, I thought, “Why travel anywhere else?”

But California, by itself as a theme, is as unwieldy as its wildest lands. To narrow the focus, the design fixated on two colors: green and white. Perfect.

Green reminds me of the large leaves crowning the tall palm trees. Of Chino Hills after a much needed rainfall. Of succulents and cacti persevering with little water.

As for white, who can think of that color without also recalling the foam after an ocean wave breaks? Because my family and I enjoy boating, the color also reminds me of sails, boats, and houses blanketing almost every inch of Newport Beach’s harbor.

With these pictures in mind, I chose Italian Ruscus, Monstera Leaves, and Teepee Palm Leaves for our greenery. Italian Ruscus has a beautiful, emerald color with laterals decorating its long, lovely stems. You might’ve seen them in more than a few weddings.

Monstera Leaves are also growing in popularity, and are being found more and more in people’s homes. For our table, the Monstera Leaves, paired with the Teepee Palm Leaves, provided the perfect bold touch for something as delicate as the Italian Ruscus.

All the leaves here also provided the best backdrop for our chosen flowers: White Rose Tibet, Ivory Rose Véndela, Hydrangeas, Phalaenopsis Orchid, Dendrobium Orchids, Stock Flowers, and Larkspur. Every bloom stood out strikingly.

What do you think of our table flower decorations? Can you see the same theme inspiring your table decor? Let me know in the comments below!
